After a week of battles, the R.W. Combs Mustangs and the Chavies Cardinals stood alone on the hardwood looking to carry the 8th grade tournament trophy home. The Mustangs jumped out to the early lead, and never looked back as the galloped to the 51-45 win for the title.
The Mustangs came out strong, hitting several shots from behind the arc. The Cardinals relied on a late rally to tighten the score at 12-7 at the end of the opening period.
Chavies was able to find another gear in the second period, and kept pace with R.W. Combs. The Mustangs maintained their lead, going into the locker room with the 23-18 advantage.
The Cardinals made a strong push to get back into the game in the third period, but each rally was countered by the Mustangs. With six minutes left in the game, R.W. Combs held the 33-26 lead.
Both teams pulled out all the stops in the fourth quarter. On several occasion the Mustangs pushed the lead to double-digits.
However, Chavies would not back down. The Cardinals brought the margin down to five points with just a handful of seconds on the clock. R.W. Combs had to preserve their lead from the free throw line, hitting enough shots to pull out the 51-45 win.
