On Friday, the Hazard Bulldog football team played host to the Somerset Briar Jumpers. The Bulldogs fell behind late in the game, and for the second time in as many weeks, had to rely on a closing drive score to pull out the win.

Hazard got on the board first, putting six on the board on a 27-yard pass play from Cole Ratliff to Jason Johnson. Tyler Collins added the extra-point to give the Bulldogs the 7-0 lead.

The second quarter would belong to Somerset. The Briar Jumpers opened their scoring with a 30-yard field goal (7-3), and later took the lead on a 32-yard pass play (7-10).

Neither team would find the end zone in the third period. Hazard regained the lead in the fourth quarter with back-to-back touchdowns. The first was a 58-yard pass play from Ratliff to Bailey Blair, while the second was a 19-yard run by Ratliff. After the extra-points, the Bulldogs held the 21-10 advantage.

The Briar Jumpers quickly reciprocated with a pair of touchdown of their own. Somerset dropped a pair of bombs on Hazard. The first went for 12-yards, and the second covered 23-yards, giving the Briar Jumpers the 25-21 lead.

Hazard began their final drive with their backs against the wall, and with time running out, the Bulldogs got a 9-yard run by Cole Ratliff for the go ahead score. After Collins’ extra-point attempt was good, the Bulldogs held the 28-25 lead.

The Bulldog defense stopped any last second heroics by the Briar Jumpers, preserving the 28-25 win.
