The Hazard Bulldogs put together a strong week, going 3-1, and claiming the All “A” 14th region soccer title. The Bulldogs lost their first game of the week to district foe Letcher Central, but came back with a win over Powell County, and a pair of victories in the All “A” region tournament.

Early in the week, Hazard traveled to Letcher Central to take on the Cougars. The Bulldogs fell behind early, but was able to get a strong penalty kick in the back of the net to tie the score at two late in the second half. Letcher then pulled out the win in overtime with a long free kick that gave them the 3-2 win.

Later in the week, Hazard hosted Pike Central. The Hawks have been improving as of late, but could not keep with the Bulldogs.

Hazard got on the board early, picking up a goal in the first ten minutes. The remaining 70 minutes turned into a defensive struggle as neither team could get a good look at the goal. Hazard went on to win the game by the final of 1-0.

On Sunday, Hazard entered into the All “A” region tournament. The Bulldogs opened the event with the Jackson City Tigers.

The Tigers got on the board first, and went into the half with the 1-0 lead. However, in the opening minute of the second half, the Bulldogs tied the game on a Caleb Beverly goal.

The game remained tied until the final two minutes of the contest. Hazard was able to get off a shot, but the Jackson City goalie tracked it down. At the last second, a Tiger defender headed the ball away, and into the goal. The goal gave Hazard the 2-1 lead, and the win.

In the championship game, the Bulldogs took on the Wolves from Wolfe County. The Wolves advanced to the title game without playing as their opponent (Buckhorn) did not show.

Hazard’s defense shut down the Wolfe County offense from start to finish. The Bulldogs threw the shutout, while managing to put three goals on the board. Zach Fleming scored two goals, while Caleb Beverly added the other.

The Bulldogs will play Oneida Baptist in the sectionals next week, with the winner moving on to the state tournament.
