Lady Dawgs split week, but win title

By Tony McGuire -

The Hazard Lady Bulldog soccer team played a pair of games this week. In the first game, the Lady Bulldogs traveled to Letcher to take on the Lady Cougars. They then finished their week with the Breathitt County Lady Bobcats and the All “A” tournament.

In the first game of the week, Hazard battled a strong Letcher Central team. The Lady Bulldogs were able to get but one goal during the contest, while the Lady Cougars managed to put five shots in the net.

On Sunday, the Lady Bulldogs played the Lady Bobcats of Breathitt County in the only game of the 14th region All “A” tournament (there are only two All “A” schools with soccer teams in the region). Hazard got on the board first, but allowed Breathitt County to tie the game.

The game stayed knotted at one throughout the second half. With time winding down, Hazard got the go ahead goal. The goal took the wind out of the Lady Bobcats, and the Lady Bulldogs took advantage, scoring two more before the horn. Hazard went on to win the title by the score of 4-1.

The Lady Bulldogs will take on the Lady Mountaineers of Oneida Baptist next week, with the winner advancing to the state tournament.

Hazard stats for the week: Goals: Carmen Shepherd 2, McCall Davis 1, Amanda Asher 1 and Rose Clemons 1. Assists: Amanda Asher 2.
