Ten of the victims were traveling in motor vehicles. Four were not wearing seat belts. Four of the fatalities were the result of crashes involving alcohol. Two of the fatalities were riding ATVs and one was not wearing a helmet. One fatality was a pedestrian.
One double-fatality crash occurred in Metcalfe County. Two single-fatality crashes occurred in Jefferson County and two in Oldham County. One single-fatality crash occurred in each of the following counties: Christian, Graves, Hardin, Morgan, Ohio, Warren and Wayne counties.
Through July 17, preliminary statistics* indicate that 354 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2011. This is 37 fewer than reported for this time period in 2010. Of the 283 motor vehicle fatalities, 155 victims were not wearing seat belts. Of the 28 motorcycle fatalities, 16 were not wearing helmets. Nine of the 11 ATV fatalities were not wearing helmets. The one scooter fatality was not wearing a helmet. Two bicycle riders have lost their lives. Twenty-eight pedestrians have been killed. One fatality resulted when a motor vehicle struck an animal-drawn vehicle. A total of 57 fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol.
Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555. Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.
*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
