This weekend, the Nextel Cup visited the Atlanta International Speedway. The race proved to be one of the most significant of the early season as many drivers lost or gained several positions during the day.
The race got off to a rocky start as a first lap wreck put several of the top drivers into the garage for repairs, most notably Jeff Gordon and Matt Kenseth. Equipment malfunctions also claimed its share of drivers as Dale Earnhardht Jr. struggled with his car all day, and Kurt Busch fell out of contention late with tire problems.
Several drivers, however, had a good day at the track. Carl Edwards edged Jimmie Johnson at the finish line by less than half a car length for his first ever Nextel Cup win. Johnson, who is awaiting a suspension from NASCAR, moved into first place in the point standings with the second place finish.
Greg Biffle, one of the hottest drivers of the season, took third in the race and moved into second overall. The biggest movements within the top ten came from Elliott Sadler, who moved up five positions to eighth place, while Mark Martin moved from ninth to fifth place.
The biggest falls of the day belonged to Jeff Gordon and Kyle Petty. Gordon, who was involved in the first lap crash, finished in 39th place, dropping him to 12th (-8). Kyle Petty also dropped eight spots due to his 36th place finish.
