In appreciation for the many contributions to the Hazard/Perry County Senior Citizens Center in Hazard, an awards ceremony was held Thursday to honor those contributors that pledged monetary donations during last year's Radio Days.
Radio Days, which will be held live at WSGS studios on Main Street Hazard on May 11th from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., is the sole fundraiser held by the Hazard/Perry County Senior Citizens Center in order to raise money for the Senior Citizens program.
Last year the fundraiser garnered many pledges and donations from area business and local residents. According to Melissa Vermillion, Director of the Senior Citizens Program, $51,000 were raised through the efforts of Radio Days. "Hopefully we will match that goal this year," Vermillion said. "Any Amount given to the Senior Citizens Center, small or large, is greatly appreciated." The money raised by Radio Days goes to fund the Senior Citizens Program which, among other things, provides free transportation to citizens 60 years or older as well as provides activities such as art, aerobics, and computer classes.
There were three classes of contributions that were awarded with certificates at Thursday's ceremony. The bronze contributions, those who have pledged $250-$499, were the first, as silver ($500-$999) and gold ($1000 or greater) rounded out the list. This year's ceremony awarded forty-two contributors and two special awards were given as well. The late Virginia Brashear, who just recently passed away and had served on the Board of Directors for the Senior Citizens Program, was posthumously awarded. Dr. C. Vernon Cooper, Jr. was given a special award as well for his past and present contributions to the program.
