The Perry County Central Lady Commodores' basketball season came to an end this past week as they lost to Breathitt County 46-44 in the semifinals of the 14th region tournament. The Lady Commodores came into the game with a 29-2 record, and two wins over the Lady Bobcats in the regular season. However, both regular season games were close, and at tournament time, you can throw the records out the window.
The two teams traded baskets in the early going, with Breathitt County holding the lead as the first period reached its midway point. Heather Sturdivant hit back-to-back 15-ft. jumpers to give Perry Central the 9-8 lead at the 3:35 mark. At the end of the period, the Lady Commodores held a slim 17-13 advantage.
Scoring dropped off considerably, for both teams, in the second quarter. However, Perry Central continued to hold the advantage throughout. By the time the game had reached the intermission, the Lady Commodores had the 25-19 lead.
Breathitt County was able to cut the Perry Central lead to two (29-27) early in the third period, but the Lady Commodores quickly recovered and had a 36-31 lead going into the final period.
Things began to go bad for the Lady Commodores early in the fourth quarter, as the Lady Bobcats began to chip away at the lead. Breathitt County scored the first two baskets of the period to tie the game at 36.
Perry Central managed to keep control of the game until there was less than two minutes to play. With 1:58 on the clock, Collett Cole picked up a loose ball in the backcourt and picked up the hoop and the harm. Cole completed the 3-pt. play, giving Breathitt County the 45-44 lead.
Both teams had several opportunities to put the game away down the stretch, but neither could convert. With 33 seconds on the clock, Perry Central missed a pair of free throws, and went on to miss three shots for the tie.
Breathitt County went on to win the game by a final score of 46-44. Kristen Madden led the Lady Commodores, and all scorers, with 25 points, while Collett Cole led the Lady Bobcats with 23 points.
