The Buckhorn Wildcats and the Viper Hornets hooked up in the second round of the 8th grade county tournament. The Wildcats had little trouble disposing of the Hornets as they opened up a sizeable lead early, and held on for the 44-17 win.
Buckhorn held Viper to a single field goal in the opening quarter, opening the door for a 10-2 lead at the buzzer. The Wildcats soon had a double-digit lead in the second period, and eased into the locker room with a 22-7 advantage.
The Wildcats blew the game open early in the third period, again holding the Hornets to a single field goal. The difference in the quarter (40-10) would be enough to set the clock in motion for the final frame.
Buckhorn was able to move on in the tournament with the 44-17 win. John Pence and Chris Coots each had 5 points for the Hornets, while Matt Day led Buckhorn, and all scorers, with 11 points on the night.

Hornet stats:
field goals: 7, free throws: 3 of 9 (66.6%).
