Cards outlast Dores in TECO Coal Bowl
by TONY MCGUIRE
The Perry County Central Commodores hosted the Sheldon Clark Cardinals in the first annual TECO Coal Bowl on Friday. The game turned out to be more competitive than anyone expected, and a lot closer than the score would indicate.
The Commodores opened the game with an impressive drive that took but a handful of plays to complete. Demetri Travis started the drive with a 30-yard run, while Jordan Amis hooked up with Eric Back for a 45-yard pass play that gave the Commodores the early 7-0 lead.
Sheldon Clark would tie the score on their next possession with a hard-nosed ground attack. The Cardinals kept the ball on the ground and quickly pounded it into the end zone (7-7).
Perry Central wasted little time getting the lead back. On their very next possession, The Commodores’ Demetri Travis broke off a 52-yard run that left him standing alone in the end zone (14-7).
Sheldon Clark would score the next two touchdowns. The first came on a long drive, and the second a short 16-yard drive set up by a Perry Central fumble (14-20).
The two teams traded touchdowns in the second quarter. Perry Central scored first on a 14-yard touchdown catch by Chance Ashworth (20-20). Sheldon Clark took a touchdown lead later in the period, leaving the Commodores a couple of minutes to tie the game before the half.
The Commodores were able to sustain a long drive toward the end zone, but ran out of time. Perry Central was able to get into the red zone, and eventually made it to the 3-yard line, but the horn sounded before they could break the plane. The Cardinals went into the locker room with a 27-20 lead.
Sheldon Clark scored on their opening drive of the third quarter, giving them the 34-20 lead. The Commodores struck back with a touchdown on a 1-yard John Yancy Amis run (27-34).
The Commodores’ defense stood strong on the next series, forcing the Cardinals into a 4th and long situation. The Cardinals decided to go for it, and broke off a 72-yard touchdown run. The play was not without controversy as the Sheldon Clark runner seemed to have put down a hand and knee on the play. However, the play stood, giving the Cardinals a 41-27 lead.
Perry Central did not let the play get them down, and came back with another drive that would leave them in the end zone. John Yancy Amis picked up his second rushing touchdown of the night after a long drive. This one covered 2-yards (34-41).
The Cardinals needed but one play to score on their next drive, a 52-yard run. This time, the Commodores would not have an answer. Sheldon Clark added an insurance touchdown on their next possession, and went on to win the game by the final score of 53-34.
