Meardie Kidd Fugate

Meardie Kidd Fugate, who was born on August 22, 1950, at Busy, departed this life on Tuesday, March 11, at his home in Lotts Creek.  At the time of his death, he was fifty-seven years of age.  A life-long resident of Perry County, he was a mine foreman for the Whitaker Coal Company.  He was a member of the Krypton Masonic Lodge #905, Oleika Temple and the Eastern Star.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Meardie Fugate, Sr. and Helen Morris Fugate and one sister, Joyce Fugate.

He is survived by his loving wife, Judy Fugate of Hazard; sons Steven R. Fugate and fiancé Missy of Hazard, Brandon L. and wife Layla Fugate of Breathitt County and Tyler Fugate of Hazard; his brother Bobby and wife Geneva Fugate of Bulan and his sisters, Janice Williams, Judy and husband Mark Everage all of Hazard, Nola and husband Paul Joseph of Wooton and Connie and husband James Stidham of Mt. Sterling.  He is also survived by three grandchildren and a host of other family members and friends.

The family received friends on Thursday evening, March 13, at the Engle-Walker Funeral Home where the funeral service was conducted on Friday morning, March 14, at 11:00 AM with Howard Owens and Bob Combs officiating.  The burial was at the Balis Napier Cemetery at Lotts Creek.

All arrangements were entrusted to the staff of the Engle-Walker Funeral Home.

Vicie Hignite Johnson

Vicie Hignite Johnson of Hazard passed away on Tuesday, March 11, at the Hazard A.R.H.   At the time of her death, she was ninety-two years of age.  The daughter of the late Joe and Bertha Hoskins Hignite, she was also predeceased by her siblings, Joseph and Taylor Hignite and Beulah Howard.

Mrs. Johnson is survived by four nephews; Joe and Taylor Hignite, both of Hazard, Lester Howard and Paul Rydner, both of Dayton, Ohio; one niece, Renee Howard of Crossville, Tennessee and a special cousin, Marie Gibson of Florence, Kentucky.

There will be no funeral service.  Interment will be at the Busy Cemetery at Busy.

All arrangements were entrusted to the staff of the Maggard Mountain View Chapel.

David L. Penman

David L. Penman of Stanford, Kentucky, passed away on Tuesday, March 11, at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville.  At the time of his death, he was fifty-eight years of age.  He was born on April 13, 1949, to David Henry and Josephine Coulter Penman, now both deceased.  He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Marsha Henderson, Wilma and Ernestine Penman as well as one grandson, Zendall Noble, Jr.

He retired after fourteen years of service with the Kentucky State Police having served at the Hazard, Mayfield and Richmond Posts.  He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Stanford.

He is survived by his wife, LaDonna G. Penman of Hazard; five children, Charles Coulter of Brooklyn, New York, Althea Penman of Danville, Melissa Neal of Richmond, Justin Wayne Penman of Lexington and Derrick Kennedy of Somerset; three step-children, Tony Noble, Thomas and Tracy Napier all off Hazard; four brothers, James Penman of Lexington, George Penman of Stanford, Hershel Penman of Danville and Mitchell Penman of Palm Coast, Florida and five sisters, Virginia Neal, Anna Bright  and Wanda Penman, all of Stanford and Joyce Daugherty and Geraldine Penman, both of Lexington.  Along with his twenty-grandchildren, he is survived by a host of nieces and nephews.

The family received friends on Thursday evening, March 13, at the Spurlin Funeral Home in Stanford where the funeral service was conducted on Friday afternoon, March 14, at 2:00 PM with Rev. Robert Coulter, Jr. officiating.

Memorials are requested to be made to the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky.

Paul H. Colwell

Paul H. Colwell, who was born on March 26, 1921, departed this life on Sunday, March 9, at the Hazard Appalachian Regional Medical Center.  At the time of his death, he was eighty-six years of age.  He was born in Busy, the son of Garrett and Nancy Hamblin Colwell, both now deceased.  Along with his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Jettie Couch Colwell and his sister, Maude Colwell.

Mr. Colwell, who had been an educator for many years, graduated from Caney College, and he received his Master’s degree from the University of Kentucky.  He worked in the Perry County School system for many years where he was Principal of the M.C. Napier High School for eight years as well as having been principal at Buckhorn High School and Big Creek Elementary.  After joining the Hazard City School system, he served as Principal at Lothair Elementary as well as Supervisor of Schools.  At the age of thirty-five, he became an ordained minister, staying active as pastor of several churches until his health began to fail.

He is survived by his son, Lloyd G. and wife Joyce Colwell of Yerkes; two sisters, Mae Campbell of Yerkes and Murrel Napier of Elizabethtown; his granddaughter, Camella Carole and husband Jeffrey Johnson of Lexington and his great-grandchildren, Neal, Travis and Madelyn Johnson all of Lexington.  Along with a host of nieces, nephews, friends and other relatives, he is also survived by a special friend, Willard Ashworth of Happy.

The family received friends on Tuesday evening, March 11, at the Engle-Walker Funeral Home where the funeral service was conducted on Wednesday afternoon, March 12, at 1:00 PM with Rev. Paul Couch officiating.  The burial was at the Garrett Colwell Cemetery at Yerkes.

Velma D. Brashear

Velma D. Brashear, a resident of Viper,  the widow of Elliott H. Brashear,  passed away on Wednesday, March 12, at the St. Joseph Medical Center in Lexington.  At the time of her death, she was eighty-seven years of age.  Mrs. Brashear was a nurse at the Hurst-Snyder Hospital in Hazard.

She is survived by her special cousins, Alma Barger of Florida, Georgia Cox of Nicholasville, Kentucky, and Christine Sandlin of Grapevine; sisters-in-law Chesney Brashear of Viper and Mary Rutledge of Hazard; brother-in-law Arthur Brashear of Viper and nieces, Gail Combs of Versailles, Brenda Nease and Debbie Fugate, both of Viper.

The family received friends on Friday evening, March 13, at the Brashear-Callahan Funeral Home where the funeral service was conducted on Saturday morning, March 14, at 11:00 AM with Kenny Salmons officiating.  The burial was at the Red Hill Cemetery at Chavies.

Viola K. “Nannie” Combs

Mrs. Viola Combs, who was born on May 15, 1926, departed this life on Monday, March 10, at the Hazard Appalachian Regional Medical Center.  At the time of her death, Mrs. Combs was 81 years of age.  The widow of Goodloe Combs, she was a native of Stearns, Kentucky, the daughter of the late Maudie and Roscoe Mee.  She was affiliated with the Christopher Church of God and enjoyed flowers, artist, poetry, family and friends and her grandchildren.  Along with her husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Louetta Feltner; her grandson, Richard Wayne Combs; her sister, Ruby Ketron and her brother Merle Mee.

Mrs. Combs is survived by her son, Richard and wife Betty Combs of Christopher; her brother, Harold Mee also of Christopher; two sisters, Carol Bryant of Vicco and Imajean Burcham of Christopher, and her special friends, Bruce and Jo Stephens.  Her surviving grandchildren are Charles Ketron III, Carl Raymond Ketron, Justin Combs and Teresa Johnson.  She is also survived by three great-grandchildren, Hailey Begley, Caleb Begley and Mathias Ketron along with a host of friends and other relatives.

The family received friends on Wednesday evening, March 12, at the Engle-Walker Funeral Home where the funeral service was conducted on Thursday morning, March 13, at 11:00 AM with Rev. Fred Ballard officiating.  The burial was at the Combs Family Cemetery at Christopher.

Ray Maggard

Ray Maggard of Hazard, the husband of Mildred Maggard, passed away on Tuesday, March 11, at the Hazard Appalachian Regional Hospital.  At the time of his death, Mr. Maggard was eighty-one years of age.  He was born on August 30, 1926, to Nellie Combs and Irvine Maggard, now both deceased.  He was retired from the Peabody Coal Company.

Along with his wife, Mildred Maggard, he is survived by three daughters, Doris Jean and husband Cordis Bishop and Janice and husband Wilbert Hurt, all residents of Hazard and Erva and husband Terry Joe Johnson of Amber, Oklahoma; one son, Jerry Wayne and wife Linda Maggard of Owensboro; one sister, Eunice and husband Kenneth Salyers of Crew, Virginia; one brother, Irvine and wife Pat Maggard of Muncie, Indiana; thirteen grandchildren, twenty-three great-grandchildren and his beloved pet, Casey.

The family received friends on Thursday evening, March 13, at Maggard’s Mountain View Chapel where the funeral service was conducted on Friday afternoon, March 14, at 1:00 PM with Densmore Goodson officiating.  Interment was at the Hurt Cemetery, Upper Second Creek.

Jesse Harris, Jr.

Jesse Harris, Jr., the husband of Eva Walker Harris, passed away on Tuesday, March 11, at his home.  At the time of his death, he was fifty-eight years of age.  Mr. Harris was employed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as Office Administrator.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse and Atha Harris.

Along with his wife, Eva, he is survived by three daughters, Jessica Ann Harris, Micah Green and Felicia Nichole Harris; two sons, Alvin Dewayne Harris and Emmanuel Scott Harris; four sisters, Benetta Grace, Theresa Macon, Ada Adair and Mattie Morton and one brother, Anthony Daughtery.  Along with host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and other family members, he is also survived by his six grandchildren.

The family received friends at the New Hope Christian Center on Friday morning, March 14, from 10:00 AM until the funeral hour of 1:00 PM.  Rev. Mike Barnett and other ministers officiated at the service.  Interment was at the Lick Branch Cemetery.

Nadine Davison

Nadine Davidson of Dayton, Ohio, the widow of Arlie Davidson, passed away on Thursday, March 13, at Maria Joseph Living Care Center.  At the time of her death, she was seventy-nine years of age.  She was born in Smithsboro, Kentucky on January 2, 1929, the daughter of Frank and Larcena Smith.  She was a member of the Salem Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses.  Along with her husband and her parents, she was also preceded in death by her daughter, Phyllis French and her son, Arlie Ray Davidson.

She is survived by her daughters, Shirley Davidson and Jeri and husband Eric West; her sons, Shelby Davidson, Randy and wife Lisa Davidson; her nine grandchildren, Cate, Anna, Lee, Jenny, Kelsey, Jake, Luke, Sarah and Bryon and her two great-grandchildren, Tabitha and Rylaja.  She is also survived by numerous other relatives and friends.

The family received friends on Sunday evening, March 16, at the George C. Jerry Lynn Adams, Sr.

Jerry Lynn Adams, Sr. of Hardburly passed away at his residence on Wednesday, March 12.  At the time of his death, he was fifty-three years of age.  An employee of Locust Grove, Inc., he was the son of the late Nathaniel Adams and Edna Faye Smith.

He is survived by his wife, Angela Adams; his son, Jerry Lynn Adams, Jr.; three sisters, Eva Jean Johnson, Kathy Branson and Anna May Baker; two brothers, Rocky and Jody Adams; his aunt, Patsy Wilson and his uncle, Ardell Smith.  He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

The family received friends on Saturday evening, March 15, at Maggard’s Mountain View Chapel where the funeral service was conducted on Sunday afternoon, March 16, at 1:00 PM with Rev. Terry Joseph officiating.  Interment was at the Mountain View Memorial Gardens, Hazard.

John Gregory Workman

John Gregory Workman of Winfield, West Virginia, the husband of Sharon Workman, died on Wednesday, March 12, in Winfield.  He was self-employed as a heavy equipment mechanic, operating Workman’s Repair Service.  A one-hundred per-cent family man, he dedicated much of his energy to his wife, daughter and family.  He was also an Assistant Coach for the Winfield High School Girls Softball Team.

Along with his wife, Sharon, he is survived by his parents, John and Nina Workman; his daughter, Kristen Workman; two sisters, Lorrie and husband Wade Lindon and Heather and husband Andy Musick; his brother, Jamie and wife Stephanie Workman; he grandmother, Jackie Workman and his mother-in-law, Marie Combs.  He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

The family received friends on Saturday afternoon, March 15, from noon until 3:00PM.  Interment was at the Mountain View Memorial Gardens, Hazard.

Ray Dean Napier

Ray Dean Napier of Vicco passed away on Saturday, March 15, at the Hazard A.R.H. Medical Center.  At the time of his death, he was thirty-six years of age.  He is survived by his father, Bobby Dean Napier of Vicco; his mother, Christine Grimes Napier; his step-mother, Brenda Napier and his daughter, Rae Anna Napier of Vicco.  His surviving siblings are Lillian Ann Riley, Josie Faye Napier, Roseanna Napier, Lonnie Dean and Robbie Dean Napier, all residents of Vicco and Calvin John Napier of Mt. Olivet.  Along with two nieces, one nephew and a host of other family and friends, he is also survived by a special friend, Hattie Mosley.

The family received friends on Monday evening, March 17, at the Vicco Baptist Church where the funeral service was conducted on Tuesday afternoon, March 18, at 1:00 PM with Shawn Stump officiating.  The burial was at the Rest Haven Cemetery at Jeff.

Mollie Combs Asher

Mollie Combs Asher, the widow of Blevins Asher, Jr., passed away on Friday, March 14, at the Hazard A.R.H. Medical Center.  At the time of her death, she was seventy-three years of age.  Born on January 13, 1935, at Leatherwood, she was the daughter of the late Jim and Dove Smith Combs.  She was a homemaker and a member of the Baptist Church.

Along with her parents and husband, she was also predeceased by her son, Donnie Shepherd, her grandchildren, Mathew Duff and Jim Shepherd, her great-grandson, Buddy Allen Shepherd and one brother and four sisters.

She is survived by two sons, Carl David Asher of Evart, Michigan and Danny and wife Rebecca Asher of Happy; three daughters, Marcella Duff of Racine, Ohio, Carol Sue Brickles of Primroe, Ohio and Linda Baker of Delphia.  She is also survived by five brothers, five sisters, twenty-six grandchildren and twenty-four great-grandchildren.

The family received friends on Sunday evening at The Big Leatherwood Baptist Church where the funeral service was conducted at noon on Monday, March 17, with Rev. Della Sue Colwell

Della Sue Colwell, the wife of Billy Ray Colwell, passed away on Friday, March 14, at the Crestwood Medical Center in Athens, Alabama.  At the time of her death, she was sixty-two years of age.  The daughter of the late Jack and Ella Whitt, she was also preceded in death by her son, Terry Wayne Colwell and three brothers, Jackie, Alvin and Claude Whitt.  Mrs. Colwell, who was a homemaker, was a member of the Krypton Brethren Church and the Krypton Eastern Star.

Along with her husband, Billy Ray Colwell of Athens, Alabama, she is survived by their son, Harvey and wife Denise Colwell of Chavies; daughters Leann and husband Bob Reed, Jr. of Athens, Alabama, and Faith Colwell of Ontario, California; five brothers, Isiah Whitt of Cincinnati, Ohio, Kermit Whitt of Goshen, Ohio, Cecil Whitt of Batavia, Ohio, McCellon Whitt of Newport News, Virginia and Fallon Whitt of Colorado Springs, Colorado; eleven grandchildren, Kyle, Chalyn, Brittany, Erica, James, Robin, Desirae, Sarah, Kim, Andrew, Dayna and Della Sue.  She is also survived by a host of other relatives and friends.

Ruth W. Pigman

Ruth W. Pigman of Hazard, the widow of Fred M.Pigman, passed away on Friday, March 14, at the Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington.  At the time of her death, she was sixty-seven years of age.  Along with her husband, she was predeceased by her parents, Taylor Wells and Gladys Adams Wells.

Mrs. Pigman is survived by her daughter, Rebecca Day; her sons, Kenny and Mike Hawkins and Dennis Pigman; her sisters, Lula Downs, Gene Killen, Faye Dotson, Gracie and Judy Wells; her brothers, Kyle Wells, Kenneth Wells, Bill Wells and Cletus Wells  Along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, she is also survived by her six grandchildren.

The family received friends on Monday evening at the Maggard Mountain View Chapel.  The funeral service was conducted on Tuesday afternoon, March 18, at 1:00 PM at the Community Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dana Feltner officiating.  Interment was at the Riverside Cemetery.

Colleen Cathy Ritchie Daugherty

Colleen Cathy Ritchie Daugherty, 213 Lamond Ruelle, Winchester, Kentucky, the wife of Jerry Y. Daugherty, passed away on Sunday morning, March 16, at their home.  At the time of her death, she was sixty-two years of age.

A native of Hindman, she was the daughter of the late Sidney and Bertha Conley Ritchie.  Along with her parents, she was also preceded in death by her brother, Kenneth Warren.  She was a retired Registered Nurse and a member of the Northside Baptist Church in Winchester.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by one daughter, Jerry Lynn and husband Steve Dennis of Bourbon County; one granddaughter, Natalie Elena Colleen Dennis also of Bourbon County; one sister, Sylvia Sidney Rowland of Las Vegas, NV; six brothers, Alan Ladd Ritchie of Fountain, Colorado, Chadwick Oneal Ritchie of Lexington, Newell Graden Ritchie of Zionsville, Indiana, Elwood Ritchie of Lexington, Winfield Ritchie of Lexington and Sidney “Tucson” Ritchie, Jr.; two aunts, Kathern Fugate of Fisty and Bell Ritchie of Michigan; one niece, Trischa Colleen Mallory of Panama City Beach, Florida, and several nieces and nephews and cousins.

Visitation was held on Tuesday evening, March 18, at the Scobee Funeral Home, West Lexington Avenue, Winchester, Kentucky, where the funeral service was conducted on Wednesday morning, March 19, at 10:00 AM with Rev. Jessie Kline officiating.  The burial was at the North Middletown Cemetery.

Pall bearers were Steve Dennis, Gene Daugherty, Newell Ritchie, Alan Ritchie, Bobby Ritchie and Tim Baker.

Mrs. Mollie M. Hensley

Mrs. Mollie M. Hensley, the wife of Vellis Hensley, departed this life on Sunday, March 9.  At the time of her death, Mrs. Hensley was eighty-four years of age.  A native of Hyden, she was the daughter of the late Matt and Nannie Maggard Asher, born to them on May 23, 1923.  Along with her parents, she was predeceased by two brothers; Kenneth and Marcus Asher; one sister, Edith Farmer and one grandchild, Ashley Hunley.

Along with her husband, Vellis Hensley of Corbin, she is survived by her son, Vellis Hensley, Jr. and wife Debbie of Hazard; her brother, Mason and wife Thelma Asher of Louisville; sisters Martha and husband Berlin Howard and Rosie Muncy, all of Indiana.  She was the grandmother of eight, Colressa Maria Hunley, Vellis Craig Hensley, Ruth Vellisa Hensley, Nadine Marie Hensley, Allison Paige Hensley, Jacob Brendon Hensley, Jarrod Mason Hensley and Hannah Karley Rose Hensley.  She is also survived by seven great-grandchildren and her very special friend, Ivy Mosley along with a host of other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Hensley was a homemaker and a former employee of Wise Department Store and Melton’s Florist and Gift Shop.  She had been affiliated with the Laurel Chapel Christian Church and had been a resident of Laurel County for the past twenty-two years.

The family received friends on Tuesday evening, March 11 at the Dwayne Walker Funeral Home Chapel in Hyden where the funeral service was conducted on Wednesday afternoon, March 12, at 2:00 PM with Derek Baker, Barry Farris and James Hamblin officiating.  The burial was at the Resthaven Cemetery at Jeff.  Pallbearers were Craig Hensley, Allen Hunley, Clifton Fee, Jr., Robert Asher, Hoy Douglas Simpson, Clellan Hensley and Jeff Hensley.

Edith L. Pendleton

Edith L. Pendleton, the wife of James C. Pendleton, Sr. of Madison, Indiana, passed away on Monday, March 17, at Hickory Creek of Madison, Madison, Indiana.  At the time of her death, she was eighty-five years of age.  Mrs. Pendleton, a native of Lawrenceburg, Indiana, retired in 1984 as a nurse at King’s Daughters’ Hospital where she had help start the first Intensive Care Unit.  She attended nurses training at Deaconess Hospital, Cincinnati, Ohio.  After graduation, she enlisted in the Army Nurse Corp during WWII.

She and her husband served as Co-Mayors for the Canaan Fall Festival in 2000.  She was also an active member of the Indian-Kentuck Baptist Church and was a delegate for the Southeastern area of Indiana on the American Baptist Churches USA General Board in Valley Forge, PA.  She also served in various missionary societies.  Mrs. Pendleton, who graduated from the Lawrenceburg, Indiana, High School in 1940, was a member of the American Legion, Post #9, and she had been active in Senior Citizens groups.  A talented artist and quilter, she will be remembered as a devoted wife and mother.

Mrs. Pendleton was preceded in death by her parents, Henry Fred and Wilamina Steiner Morling and one brother, Fred Henry Morling.

Along with her husband, whom she married on September 7, 1946, she is survived by two sons, James C. Pendleton, Jr. and wife Theresa of New Washington, Indiana and John and wife Carol Pendleton of Columbus, Indiana; three daughters, Barbara and husband Nic Peitrangelo of Grand Haven, Michigan, Willa and hus Tom Vire of Martin, Georgia and Ellen and husband Rich Kurr of Stow, Ohio; two sisters, Katherine and husband Bill Franz of Lawrenceburg, Indiana, and Ruth and husband Steve McMullen of Hamilton, Ohio.  She was the grandmother of Shawn Powell, Anna, Joe and Rachel Pietrangelo, J.T., Joshua and Jarrett Vire, James Douglas, Lindsay and Jonathon Pendleton and Brian and Alex Kurr.  She is also survived by seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Thursday evening, from 4-8:00 PM at the Vail-Holt Funeral Home’s Hilltop Chapel.  The funeral service will be conducted on Friday morning, March 21, at 11:00 AM at the Indian-Kentuck Baptist Church with Rev. Donald J. Burke and Rev. Ed Roberts officiating.  Interment will be at Canaan Cemetery.  The Honor Guard of the American Legion Post #9 will conduct military services at the gravesite.
