Mine safety competition opens in Hazard
by Bailey Richards
The annual mine safety competition got underway Wednesday morning on the football field at Hazard High School.
Mine safety and rescue teams from across the Appalachian coafields came out to test there skills. The field is marked out with strings and cones to simulate an underground mine with boxes and rooms. On the ground are taped signs that represent different obstacles such as smoke, fire, pinned miners, and various people working in the mine.
The teams have to navigate this simulation with speed, accuracy, and safety in mind.
The Alpha Natural Resources Team, pictured here, navigated the maze of simulated tunnels while being judged by experts and scored along the way.
