Dozens of people gathered at Perry County Park on Friday for a walk to raise awareness about elder abuse. June 15 was Elder Abuse Awareness Day, which is celebrated throughout the nation, noted Kim Boggs, director of the Hazard-Perry County Senior Center. Friday’s event in Hazard was held to increase awareness, but also to let people know the signs of elder abuse. Nearly two million seniors in America are believed to experience abuse of some kind annually, according to the Center of Excellence on Elder Abuse at the University of California at Irvine. Some signs of abuse can include lack of basic hygiene, untreated bed sores and lack of medical aids, such as glasses, hearing aid and medications. Elder abuse can also include financial exploitation, such as a caregiver who has control of the senior’s money, but does not provide for his or her needs. Other forms of abuse include physical or emotional.
