The Leatherwood Lady Wildcats and the Buckhorn Lady Wildcats hooked up in the opening round of the 8th grade girls’ Perry County tournament on Saturday. Leatherwood jumped out to the early lead, and then cruised to the 41-11 win.

Leatherwood used their defense to spark their offense in the first period, and by the time the horn sounded, they held the 14-0 lead. Little changed in the second quarter, and Leatherwood went into the locker room sitting on a 27-0 lead.

Buckhorn finally broke the ice in the third period with a free throw. However, it would not be enough to keep the continuous clock from starting. Going into the final period, Leatherwood held the 39-1 lead.

The final period went quickly with the clock in motion. The game ended with Leatherwood moving on in the tournament with the 41-11 win.

Leatherwood (41) Kersey 2, Gilliam 8, Hicks 13, Whitaker 2, Halcomb 8, Pratt 4, Vanzant 2 and Brock 2.

Buckhorn (11) Alyssa 2, Brittany 5, Kristin 2 and Makayla 2.
