One of the most anticipated games of the season took place at the John C. Combs Arena on Saturday as the Perry County Central Commodores and the Knott County Central Patriots took to the floor with the championship of the WYMT Whayne Supply Mountain Classic on the line. The momentum changed hands with each period, with the Commodores eventually claiming the win.
Perry Central’s defense proved to be too much for Knott Central in the opening minutes of the game. The Commodores used this to their advantage and took the early lead. The Patriots eventually got on the board and made up some ground. However, Perry Central would end the quarter with a 13-9 lead.
The final basket of the first period gave the momentum to Knott Central, and they would ride the shift to the lead. Perry Central recovered late, but still went into the locker room trailing 20-19.
Travis Stacy scored all six of the Commodores’ second period points on a pair of threes, and started the third with yet another. This would be enough to kickstart a Perry Central rally.
Perry Central would push the margin to double digits within a few minutes, and eventually go up by 15. With eight minutes left to play, the Commodores held the 40-29 advantage.
The Commodores would continue to push the margin in the fourth period, and at one point held a 21-point lead. With less than four minutes remaining in the game, the Patriots went on a tear.
Knott Central’s Camron Justice dropped 23 points on the Commodores in the final minutes of the game, bring them back to within two points with only a minute left to play.
On the other side of the floor, Perry Central was struggling from the free throw line, giving hope to the Knott Central comeback attempt. However, as time began to run out, the Commodores were able to stop the bleeding and put up a strong defensive stand.
The Commodores were able to withstand the rally, and went on to win the game, and the title, by the final count of 67-62. Braxton Beverly led the way for the Commodores with 22 points, while Camron Justice led all scorers with 32.
