The Willlard Warhawks and the Chavies Cardinals took the floor for game number three of the 8th grade county tournament. The game was tight throughout, with the Warhawks pulling away in the final moments for the win.

From the opening tip, it was off to the races for both teams. Neither team was able to break the other’s momentum, and the period ended with Willard holding the slight advantage (11-9).

In the second period, the Cardinals’ aim was on target as they moved into the lead. Chavies continued to lead throughout the period but could not pull away. Willard’s Chandler Caudill hit a long “3” at the horn, sending the Warhawks into the locker room with the 22-21 lead.

The Cardinals came out of the intermission and jumped back in the driver’s seat. However, it would not last long as the Warhawks made their run late in the period. Going into the final period, Willard was up 34-31.

The battle continued in the final period, with Willard eventually building a five-point lead (46-41) with just a tick under a minute left on the clock. Chavies picked up a basket to cut the lead to three, and then recovered a loose ball to garner the opportunity to tie the game.

The Cardinals failed to get the shot they needed, and was forced to foul the Warhawks to put them on the line. Willard was able to ice the game from the free throw line, and moved on in the tournament with the 50-43 win.

Chandler Caudill led the Warhawks with 33-points, while Martin Estep led the Cardinals with 14-points.

Willard (50) Chandler Caudill 33, Kyle Whitaker 10 and Austin Miller 7.

Chavies (43) Donovan Engle 9, Jesse Gwin 2, Martin Estep 14, Jacob Johnson 13 and Kenton Noble 4.
