Low-income taxpayer clinic offers free help with tax issues
by Cris Ritchie
Consumers can get free help with tax issues at the Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic, a resource offered by AppalReD Legal Aid. Attorneys at the clinic work with taxpayers on a number of issues, including procuring levy releases, seeking innocent spouse relief, filing amended returns, and negotiating with the IRS. Clinic attorneys also help taxpayers deal with IRS audits or exams, appeal Earned Income Tax Credit turndowns, and combat return prep fraud.
Clinic attorneys provide expertise and advocacy for low-income taxpayers. For example, the clinic recently successfully established that a client was not responsible for $10,000 in tax debt that was improperly imposed on him due to identity theft. In another situation, the clinic assisted a taxpayer in proving to the IRS that an adoption tax credit had been improperly denied, resulting in a $13,170 refund to the taxpayer.
“We encourage all taxpayers receiving notices from the IRS or those who feel they have been improperly denied their refund to contact our office,” said Clinic Director Rachel Fortner. “There are no stupid questions when it comes to taxes, and it is okay for taxpayers to call even if they are just in need in advice.”
Taxpayers who have questions about tax issues should call the clinic at 1-800-477-1394. Taxpayers can also email Clinic Director Rachel Fortner directly at firstname.lastname@example.org. Although clinic personnel do not prepare tax returns, they can refer consumers to locations that will prepare returns for free.
