The Harlan County Black Bears picked up a big early season win Tuesday, downing 14th Region contender Hazard 8-3.

Harlan County capitalized on several Bulldog mistakes in the first inning to jump out to a 5-0 lead. The Bears pushed the lead to 6-0 with another run in the third inning. Connor Leisge reached base on a walk and later scored on a single from Blake Rutherford.

Hazard closed to the gap to 6-2 with a pair of runs in the fourth inning, but Harlan County answered with a pair of its own in the bottom half.

Hazard scored the game’s final run in the sixth inning, but the Bulldogs never seriously threatened as Harlan County cruised to the win.

Harlan County (2-1) is scheduled to return to action today at home against Perry Central. Hazard (0-1) will host Paintsville.
