Bennie Salley, 89, died Monday, April 1 at his residence in Viper.


He was a U.S. Army veteran and a retired coal miner, and the son of the late Shilo Salley and the late Sue G. Combs. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Opal Salley, and a host of brothers and sisters.


He is survived by his daughter, Virginia Salley of Viper; sons David B. Salley of Viper, Mark Anthony Salley of Viper, and Emmanuel Salley and wife Lana of Cornettsville; sister Jeanette Warren of Florida; along with nine grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and a host of family and friends.


Arrangements are being handled by Maggard Brothers Funeral Home of Hazard, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, April 3. Services will begin at 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 4 with Charlie Shepherd officiating. Interment will be at Salley Family Cemetery in Viper.
