An accident on the Hal Rogers Parkway in Clay County left one Perry County man dead over the weekend.

Ricky Sumner, 44, of Hazard, was driving a 2004 Chevrolet Impala eastbound on the parkway on Friday just after 2 p.m. when the vehicle crossed the centerline and struck the rear trailer wheels of a westbound Mack coal truck, according to the Kentucky State Police in London.

The responding officer, Trooper Justin Oliver, determined that both Sumner and the driver of the coal truck, 54-year-old Jackie Bowling of Manchester, were wearing their seat belts.

Sumner was airlifted from the scene to the Saint Joseph of London Hospital where he was pronounced dead by the Laurel County Coroner. Bowling was uninjured.

No drug or alcohol use was suspected by either driver.
