Man indicted for gas station robbery

HAZARD – A man accused of robbing an area gas station at gunpoint was indicted this month by the grand jury in Perry County.


Police were called to the Apple Market on East Main Street in the early morning hours of May 1 after a male subject walked into the business, brandished a firearm and demanded money from the clerk. The man, whom police later identified as 45-year-old Richie Slone of Hazard, allegedly left the store with an undetermined amount of cash in the direction of lower Main Street.


Following a short investigation into the incident, which was recorded on surveillance video inside the store, police located and arrested Slone, charging him with one count of first-degree robbery. He was indicted on the charge by the grand jury this past Friday, June 7.


Slone is currently lodged in the Kentucky River Regional Jail in Hazard on a $100,000 bond, and is facing a maximum of 20 years in prison if convicted. He is scheduled for arraignment on July 5 in Perry Circuit Court.


The grand jury also returned indictments in 14 other cases, including charges against two people accused of robbing a woman this past April.


Thurman Sizemore, 27, of Hazard, and 28-year-old Denise W. Slover of Busy, were indicted on charges of second-degree robbery and complicity to second-degree robbery, respectively.


Sizemore was alleged to have used physical force to steal a woman’s purse on April 8, while Slover is accused of providing aid to Sizemore by driving the getaway car. Bail in both cases was set at $100,000.


Bryan Curtis Combs, 33, of Fisty, was indicted on one count each of possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, and second-degree persistent felony offender. He is accused of possessing three handguns on April 2 after being convicted of a previous felony. Bail was set at $50,000.


Gary Stanton, 36, of Slemp, is facing his third or more charge of fourth-degree assault in the past five years, a Class D felony, along with a charge of violating an emergency protective order. According to the indictment, Stanton assaulted a woman on May 6 while also violating the condition of a protective order not to have any contact with the alleged victim. His bail was set at $20,000.


Also indicted this month was 38-year-old Denzil D. Moore of Mallie, who is charged with public intoxication, possession of drug paraphernalia, and first-degree promoting contraband for allegedly introducing the drug tizandine into the Kentucky River Regional jail on Jan. 24. His bail was set at $20,000.


Jeffrey M. Coots, 22, of Hazard, was indicted on charges of first-degree possession of a controlled substance, prescription drugs not in the proper container, illegal possession of a legend drug, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He is accused of illegally possessing oxycodone on Nov. 8, 2012. Bail was set at $20,000.


Edna J. Chapman, 29, of Hazard, is charged with misdemeanor theft, first-degree promoting contraband, and second-degree possession of a controlled substance. According to the indictment, she was alleged to have stolen merchandise from the Hazard Walmart on Dec. 15, 2012, and later introduced the drug buprenorphine into the Kentucky River Regional Jail. Her bail was set at $20,000.


Jodi Mullins, 32, of Vicco, is facing one count of driving on a DUI suspended license, third offense. She was alleged to have being diving on April 15 while her operator’s license had been suspended for a DUI conviction. Bail was set at $20,000.


Glena Neace, 36, of Hazard, was indicted on one count of cultivating marijuana over five plants. She is accused of planting or cultivating the marijuana plants on April 16. Bail was set at $20,000.


William G. Williams, 48, of Big Creek, was indicted on charges of first-degree possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia. He is accused of illegally possessing oxycodone on Feb. 11. Bail was set at $20,000.
