Cities set for 4th of July celebrations

Perry County residents will have a few events to choose from this coming 4th of July, as each of the county’s cities will host Independence Day festivities.
Vicco’s 4th of July celebration, which serves as the city’s annual festival, will take place on Main Street on Thursday, July 4. The festival will include live music at the city’s stage across from City Hall, along with food booths and other vendors. There is still free space for vendor booths available, for which information can be obtained by calling Vicco City Hall at 606-476-2414.
City officials say there will also be a tribute to the late Michael Jackson, along with the first ever George Jones Memorial Lawnmower Race which will begin at 6 p.m. The Vicco duck race take place at 7 p.m., while the annual fireworks display will take place over the city at 10 p.m.
Another celebration will begin in the northern section of the county at Buckhorn Lake State Resort Park. The park will offer games from 2 to 8 p.m. A special buffet from 5 to 9 p.m. will include barbecue, fried catfish and roast beef. The marina will be selling ice cream and vendor booths will be set up along the Marina Road. Michael Dwayne will serve as deejay from 6 to 10 p.m. near the beach house.
The city of Buckhorn and the county tourism office will sponsor the annual fireworks show over the lake after dark. All of the events will be free of charge. For more information call 1-800-325-0058.
Finally, the city of Hazard’s annual fireworks show is also scheduled for July 4. City Manager Carlos Combs noted the show will kick off after dark, and will take place in the usual area above the Highway 15 bypass near the Black Gold Shopping Center.
Prior to the fireworks, a performance to help celebrate the nation’s birthday will be held at 7:30 p.m. at the amphitheater beside City Hall. In case of rain, the performance will be at Methodist church. Letha Patterson is currently calling all kids who like to sing in grades 3-6. Rehearsal for the July 4th program will be on July 1,2, and 3 at the Bowman Memorial United Methodist Church on High St. from 9 a.m. to noon with a refreshment break in the middle.
