The Hazard Bulldogs soccer team got off to a rocky start this week with a tough 10-0 loss at Somerset. The Bulldogs were looking to set things right with a district win as they traveled to Whitesburg to take on the Letcher Central Cougars on Saturday.
Hazard got off to a good start, holding Letcher Central near midfield for most of the first half. Midway through the period, the Bulldogs took the 1-0 lead as Alex Jolly took a corner kick and headed it in from the edge of the box.
About five minutes later, however, Letcher Central was able to tie the game. With the Bulldog goalie away from the net, a loose ball made its way back into the box and was touched in.
The Cougars took the lead (2-1) with less than two minutes remaining in the half. After a hand-ball in the box, Letcher Central was able to make good on a penalty kick. The game went to the half, with the Cougars leading 2-1.
Hazard played a strong second half, keeping Letcher Central away from the goal for much of the 40 minutes. The Bulldogs, however, would give up an insurance goal to the Cougars with 3:41 left in the game. Letcher Central found the ball loose on the back side of the goal, and put it in for the 3-1 lead.
Again, with less than two-minutes left in the game, Letcher Central picked up a penalty kick due to a hand-ball in the box. The Cougars made good on the kick, giving them the 4-1 lead.
The game then ended with the Cougars claiming the 4-1 win. The win boosted Letcher Central to 2-0 on the year, and Hazard fell to 0-2 with the loss.
