He was the son of the late Andrew Colwell and the late Myrtle Hoskins Williams. He was also preceded in death by brothers Herman and Raymond Feltner; sisters Georgia Jameson, Rebecca Philbeck and Hallie Colwell.
He is survived by his wife, Sylvia Colwell; daughters Cheryl Gabbard, Corine Rayburn and Josie Essenmacher; sons Charles Lee Colwell and Sammy Colwell; sisters Betty Newberry, Zola Couch, Janie Brown, Eliza Perkins, Katie Howard, Opsie McIntyre, Gracie Suthers, Meril Baker and Cebie Colwell; brothers Ray Williams, William Colwell and Roy Colwell along with 12 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Arrangements were handled by Maggard Mountain View Chapel of Hazard where the family received friends on Sunday, May 2. The funeral service was held on Monday, May 3 with Rev. James Hamblin officiating. Interment was at Riverside Cemetery located in Hazard.
