The Perry County Central boys soccer team took on the Jackson City Tigers in the semifinals of the 32nd district tournament. The Commodores were able to collect a shutout against the Tigers, putting them in the district championship.
Things went a little slow for the Commodores at first as they could only muster a pair of goals in the first half. Travis Perry picked up the first goal on a misplayed ball in the box. Perry alertly tapped in the loose ball for the 1-0 lead.
The final goal of the half came off a corner kick. Michael Valencia placed the ball over the heads of the Jackson City defense, and Patrick Coots headed the ball in at the back post (2-0).
The Commodores picked up the pace in the second half, scoring five times. Travis Perry scored back-to-back goals to give him the hat-trick. The first came on a corner kick off the foot of Michael Valencia, and the second on an assist by Tanner Brown (4-0).
Minutes later, Michael Valencia picked up his third assist on a corner kick. Valencia went back post once again, and this time David Jones put the ball in the net (5-0).
With 10 minutes remaining in the game, Michael Valencia took on a scoring roll. Valencia picked up a long ball off the foot of Allan Messer, and beat the goalie one-on-one for the 6-0 lead.
With only a couple of ticks on the clock, Allan Messer took a penalty kick for the Commodores. Messer struck the ball low, but managed to sneak it past the goalie for the 7-0 win, and a spot in the championship game.
