Denver Sumner, 87, of Happy, died Thursday, July 5 at Rockcastle Hospital in Mount Vernon, Ky. He was a retired coal miner and a U.S. Navy veteran having served during World War II.

He was the son of the late John D. Sumner and the late Betty Stacy Sumner, and was also preceded in death by his son, Chalmer Sumner, sisters Cora Lee Cornett and Hazel Dunlap, and brothers Paul Sumner and Arlie Sumner.

He is survived by his wife, Nora Sumner; daughters Lana Hurley and husband Gary, Bertha Audrey Sumner and Danny Gibson, and Cora Lee Walker and husband James; son Denver Sumner, Jr. and wife Diana Lynn; daughter-in-law Brenda Sumner; sister Pauline Woods; brother Boyd Sumner, along with six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Arrangements were handled by Maggard Mountain View Chapel of Hazard. Services were held at the Denver Sumner Memorial Baptist Church on Sunday, July 8 with Junior Whitaker and Charles Ed Smith officiating. Interment was at Sumner-Combs Cemetery in Acup.
