Carl Wells, Sr., 80, died Sunday, Jan. 20 at his home.
The husband of Virginia Prewitt Wells, he was born May 25, 1932 in Perry County, the son of the late William H. and Scytha Drake Wells. On March 29, 1952, he married Virginia Prewitt in Hazard, and from that union had two sons, Paul Wayne Wells and Carl Wells, Jr.
In January 1956, he received his funeral director’s license from the Kentucky Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors, and in May 1961 he graduated from the Kentucky School of Embalming.
He truly loved his community and dedicated his life to serving the needs of his fellow Powell Countians through the Wells Funeral Home and Wells Ambulance Service. He also served as Powell County Coroner for 44 years. He was a member and deacon of Stanton Christian Church, longtime member of Stanton and Clay City Lions clubs, member and past master of Stanton Masonic Lodge F&AM 352, member of the Oleika Shrine temple of Lexington, and a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
He was a charter member of both the Powell County Flying Club and Beechfork Golf Club and was a former Boy Scout Leader of Troop No. 351. He also served on the Powell County Board of Directors of Whitaker Bank.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Carl Wells, Jr.; grandchildren Joshua Wells of Stanton, Megan Davis and husband David of Stanton, Heather Combs and husband Shannon of Richmond, and Rebecca Wells of Stanton; great-grandchildren Josh Davis, Virginia “Jenny” Davis, Grant Wells, Whitley Combs, and Braedon Combs; sister Catherine Pennington of Hazard; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his son, Paul Wayne Wells; brothers Jerry, William, Clarence, and Charles Wells; sisters Martha Crawford, Minerva Eversole, Mary Gibson, and Louise Harvey.
Arrangements were handled by Wells Funeral Home of Stanton, where the services were held on Friday, Jan. 25. Burial was at the Stanton Cemetery.
